Mark Morris, one of the most celebrated choreographers of our time, brings his renowned dance company to San Diego for two audience favorites.

Since its premiere in 2001, Mark Morris’s V has earned international acclaim, with The New York Times calling it “one of his best pieces” and including it among “the few great works that modern dance has produced in a decade.” Fourteen dancers emerge in a V-shaped formation, launching a visually striking, abstract celebration of movement. Driven by the exuberance and playfulness of Schumann’s vibrant Piano Quintet in E-flat Major, Op. 44, performed live, the piece is a joyful exploration of music, motion, and connection.

The evening concludes with Via Dolorosa, a powerful contemporary dance work set to a harp score by GRAMMY®-winning composer Nico Muhly, with scenic design by celebrated modern artist Howard Hodgkin. The story of Jesus’s final hours unfolds through evocative melodies and expressive movement. The work has earned praise from critics, including “awe-inspiring” (The Dance Enthusiast) and “one of the finest pieces Morris has made in years” (The Hudson Review). Following its 2024 premiere, Muhly’s score has also been praised as “uniquely beautiful” (Gramophone) and “one of the composer’s most compelling works to date” (Sequenza 21).
