Enrich Your Streaming Experience with LJMS' Education Programs
LA JOLLA MUSIC SOCIETY ANNOUNCES SPRING 2021 EDUCATION & COMMUNITY PROGRAMMING
San Diego, CA — La Jolla Music Society (LJMS) announced its spring Education & Community Programming events today. As part of a strategic development and in response to the pandemic, the society’s Education & Community Programming initiatives, events, and curriculum have all shifted online. This change allows LJMS to extend its reach to communities across San Diego, to offer in-depth, lasting engagement opportunities for students around the county, and to foster long-term relationships between visiting artists and the community. The turn to digital programming in 2021 will serve as a building block for LJMS to create hybrid models of educational programming in future seasons, when in-person activities are once again an option, and to maintain and grow its impact and outreach.

As we look to future seasons, our goal is to utilize what we’ve learned in the digital realm to support live in-person activities and create more engaging, in-depth and long term initiatives. This season’s Education & Community Programming lineup includes:
- Free-to-the-public community engagement activities, with concerts from Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, open rehearsals and a performance from the Joffrey Ballet, and Conversations with Mark Morris a series of live, interactive conversations featuring special guests Peter Sellars, Nico Muhly, and Alice Waters, hosted by Emmy Award-winning journalist Paula Zahn
- Performances by acclaimed children’s music artist Sonia De Los Santos and Discovery Series cellist Zlatomir Fung
- A composition and choreography project with Education Ambassadors-In-Residence Third Coast Percussion and Movement Art Is
- Conversations and workshops for students and educators presented by Jazz at Lincoln Center
- Online classes for LJMS’ Community Music Center

The Democracy! Suite
Program: The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra Septet’s performance of The Democracy! Suite aims to entertain, inspire, and uplift audiences with the full vigor, vision, and depth of America’s music. Led by trumpeter/composer Wynton Marsalis and featuring seven of jazz’s finest soloists, the concert’s unique repertoire celebrates jazz’s embodiment of freedom and democracy. The evening will feature the premiere of The Democracy! Suite, a new Marsalis composition written during the ongoing Covid-19 crisis as a response to the political, social, and economic struggles facing our nation. The Democracy! Suite is a swinging and stimulating instrumental rumination on the issues that have recently dominated our lives as well as the beauty that could emerge from a collective effort to create a better future.

The ConRAD Kids Family Concert Series offers unique opportunities for children ages 3-8 to enjoy music of the highest artistic quality along with their parents, grandparents, and caregivers. THIRD COAST PERCUSSION & MOVEMENT ART IS
Education Ambassadors-in-Residence
As La Jolla Music Society’s second annual Education Ambassadors, Grammy Award-winning ensemble Third Coast Percussion and Movement Art Is, founded by acclaimed dancers Lil Buck and Jon Boogz, will work with San Diego students on an innovative composition and choreography project. Over the course of two months, high school students from The Bishop’s School in La Jolla and another San Diego Unified School District high school will join forces for weekly working sessions online with these talented artists—all educators in their own right. Students will create a new work featuring original composition and dance, echoing the brilliant world premiere of Metamorphosis performed by the artists in The Baker-Baum Concert Hall in November 2020. This project will culminate with an online watch party featuring the premiere of the new work, as well as interviews with artists, students, and teachers.

La Jolla Music Society’s Community Music Center
La Jolla Music Society’s Community Music Center was the organization’s first program to pivot to a digital format. The afterschool music program provides vital support to its students, grades 4-12, helping them stay engaged, motivated, disciplined, and thinking creatively during a very difficult time. The program, which LJMS has operated for over 20 years, has had roughly 70 students enrolled in remote learning lessons since last April. LJMS provides free instruments and bilingual instruction now via Zoom.
Like so many other children who are learning remotely, seventh grader Melody Montoya hasn’t been able to play in her school band class this year, but classes through the Community Music Center have kept her engaged and ready to continue learning: “Sax lessons with Ms. Maynard were so much fun, each week I left the Zoom feeling confident and happy! She helped me go from a starter to a growing learner on the sax. I’m looking forward to more!”
