San Diego dance lovers are in for a rare treat as three of the most iconic dance companies in the world are presented as part of La Jolla Music Society’s 2025 season.
Celebrating its 100th anniversary, the groundbreaking Martha Graham Dance Company comes to the San Diego Civic Theatre on January 25. The most celebrated modern dance company in America exemplifies its founder’s timeless and uniquely American style of dance – one that has influenced generations of artists and continues to captivate audiences worldwide. This once-in-a-lifetime performance includes the classic Appalachian Spring, We the People, and Cave.
Next, visionary choreographer Twyla Tharp celebrates her 60th anniversary with a coast-to-coast tour featuring her Olivier-nominated Diabelli, set to Beethoven’s masterpiece of the same name, and SLACKTIDE, a new dance to a reimagining of Philip Glass’s iconic Aguas da Amazonia. Showcasing Tharp’s uncanny and witty use of music to create work of startling originality and beauty, the two dances once again ensure Tharp’s place as one of the great artists of our time. This performance will be at the Balboa Theatre on February 13.
Finally, on March 23 comes an opportunity to see the renowned Ballet Folklórico de México de Amalia Hernández, also at the Balboa Theatre. Hernández has showcased the beauty of her culture by sharing the traditional dances of Mexico with a global audience. Now, over 70 years later, her artistic legacy continues to flourish in these exquisite works featuring great technical difficulty, elaborate costumes, and world-class dancers.
