Encounter: Exploring Philip Glass’ Piano Etudes
LECTURE
Philip Glass is one of the most influential composers in contemporary classical music. His work spans large-scale compositions—such as operas and film scores—to smaller chamber pieces, but nothing has been as cherished as his intimate piano etudes. Celebrated by many and described as “haunting,” “meditative,” and “lyrical,” these pieces are challenging to perform and test the skills of any pianist. They have even taken on new life.
Leading up to our performance of Glass’ complete Etudes, join contributing classical music critic for The New York Times Corinna da Fonseca-Wollheim to explore the breadth and brilliance of this celebrated composer.
