Steven Schick

Percussionist, conductor, and author Steven Schick is hailed as “one of our supreme living virtuosos.” A 2014 inductee into the Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame, Schick has championed contemporary music by commissioning or premiering over 150 new works. He serves as Artistic Director of the La Jolla Symphony and Chorus and the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players. As a conductor, Schick has appeared with the BBC Scottish Symphony, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, and Ensemble Modern. His recording achievements include the Diapason d’Or and the Deutscheschallplattenkritikpreis for best new music releases in 2015. His discography features the complete percussion works of Iannis Xenakis and Karlheinz Stockhausen. Schick is a Distinguished Professor and holds the Reed Family Presidential Chair at UC San Diego. His leadership roles include serving as Music Director of the 2015 Ojai Festival and Co-Artistic Director of the Summer Music Program at the Banff Centre. He is also the author of the book The Percussionist’s Art: Same Bed, Different Dreams.
