Jonathan Biss

Pianist Jonathan Biss is globally recognized for his “impeccable taste and formidable technique” (The New Yorker). A third-generation musician and Co-Artistic Director of the Marlboro Music School and Festival, Biss has performed as a soloist with the world’s foremost orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw, and London Symphony. A profound thinker and “insightful music writer” (The Boston Globe), Biss is the author of the award-winning Audible Original Unquiet: My Life with Beethoven. His commitment to the composer’s repertoire is further evidenced by his recording of the complete Beethoven piano sonatas and his popular Coursera series, “Exploring Beethoven’s Piano Sonatas.” The 2025–26 season sees Biss as Artist-in-Residence at the Kaufman Music Center and performing across Europe and the U.S., including returns to Wigmore Hall and Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. An avid champion of contemporary music, he leads the Beethoven/5 commissioning project, collaborating with composers like Caroline Shaw and Brett Dean. A recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant and the Leonard Bernstein Award, Biss previously served on the faculty of the Curtis Institute of Music.
