David Morales Boroff

Violinist/composer David Morales Boroff was raised bilingual in two musical worlds: his father a master of blues, bluegrass, and classical guitar, his mother a Juilliard-trained dancer turned flamenca. His training was in classical piano and violin, but home was a playground of folk, jazz, and self-directed composition. After private study with Pulitzer Prize–winning composer Anthony Davis, he went on to graduate from Berklee College of Music as a Presidential Scholar — one of seven awarded in an entering class of 1,500.

Morales Boroff appears on the experimental jazz album Sedimental You with bassist-composer Mark Dresser, who has praised “a beautiful violin sound and a soulful lyricism” in David’s playing. He recently served as improvising concertmaster for the premiere of Anthony Davis’s newest opera, Pancho Rabbit and the Coyote, and has performed or recorded with artists as diverse as jazz/pop polymath Jacob Collier, Armenian jazz pianist Tigran Hamasyan, and K-pop superstar Taeyeon.

One of the very few violinists in the United States working inside flamenco, David performs and tours with internationally renowned artists in the idiom. As a composer, he writes everything from big-band funk to orchestral fugues — always in pursuit of music that tells a story.

Conrad regulars may remember him onstage with Ali Paris’s ensemble. This program marks a first: Morales Boroff’s own quintet, four of San Diego’s finest beside him, and an evening of entirely original music.
