JAZZ @ THE JAI: Dan Tepfer, piano

San Diego Union-Tribune names Dan Tepfer “a concert not to miss”!

“Being a jazz pianist specializing in spur-of-the-moment musical improvisations seems almost diametrically opposed to writing exacting algorithms.

But Dan Tepfer marries both worlds by creating code that enables him to perform on stage in unison with a piano he has programmed to respond to his playing in real-time.

The twist is that Tepfer — who has collaborated with such jazz greats as Lee Konitz, Billy Hart and Christian McBride — doesn’t know what the programmed piano will play, or how he will respond to it on his keyboard, until he hears it.

The result is live, “four-handed” piano duets performed by two hands (Tepfer’s) and two phantom hands (the algorithms’).”

Jazz just got a little cooler: Witness computer graphics generated in real time to the music of Dan Tepfer. His multimedia masterpiece, Natural Machines, is a SummerFest must-see! Don’t miss this groundbreaking marriage of sound and vision like no other.
